Dothan healthcare facility is a pioneer for new drug management system

DOTHAN, Ala. (May 1, 2017) — A long-term care facility in Dothan is among the first in the state to implement new medication management and equipment that will streamline and secure filling prescriptions. Westside Terrace Healthcare recently installed Cubex remote dispensing technology approved by the Alabama Board of Pharmacy.

The change safely and securely provides immediate access and availability of patient-specific medications without the need of an in-house pharmacy.  This option improves patient care when providing drugs for emergencies or short-term purposes.

“Keeping abreast of smarter methods and helpful technology is part of providing resident-centric care,” said Kristie Hughes, administrator of Westside Terrace. “The benefit of remote dispensing makes life better for residents by having what they need when they need it.”

The closed-loop system also increases efficiency and saves residents money by providing detailed tracking for medications, which reduces unnecessary waste and discrepancies.  Electronic records are regularly reported on what drugs are being given, the dosage and amount, the time of dispensing, and who dispensed the medication.

“It is possible for some facilities to incur charges due to ineffective medication management,” said Lee Foreman, general manager for Turenne PharMedCo. “Remote dispensing is a game changer for delivery of medication.”

Turenne was one of the first pharmacy service providers in Alabama approved to use remote dispensing technology to fill prescriptions. The Montgomery business, along with other pharmacy providers and the Alabama Pharmacy Association, was instrumental in drafting the language used by the Alabama Board of Pharmacy to get approval for use of the technology.

“Mistakes and losses happen when all the details are not known. Having remote dispensing in long-term care facilities improves communication with their pharmacies and results in a better experience for the residents and staff,” Foreman said.
