(December 6, 2017) DOTHAN, Alabama – Within weeks of shutting its doors forever, the Haleburg Senior Citizen Center needed a miracle ‑ and quick. A $5,000 budget shortfall meant that seniors in the rural community of Columbia, Alabama, would lose out on the place that served their social and nutritional needs for more than 20 years. Luckily, Westside Terrace Healthcare, along with other donors, decided to come to the rescue.

“Places like the Haleburg center are often like a second home for seniors. It’s a place where they can interact with people their own age, get a hot meal and stay connected,” said Westside administrator, Kristie Hughes. “We knew we had to help when we heard that it was about to close.”

Westside donated funds to cover part of the shortfall and operating costs. During a special ceremony today at the center, Ms. Alabama Nursing Home, Sarah “Sally” Scott, on behalf of the long-term care facility, presented the donation. Westside also wanted to contribute to enriching life at the center by giving the seniors some new recreational equipment. They donated two laptop computers, an exercise peddler and a Nintendo Wii bundle pack that includes several games and accessories.

“This is such a blessing. My heart is full,” said Amanda Henderson, center director. “This has such a tremendous impact on the lives of our people.”

Hughes is just glad that Westside was able to help the seniors stay connected to their social lifeline.

“Keeping our seniors engaged is so important to ensuring their well-being,” Hughes said. “Whether it’s our residents or the seniors in our surrounding community, we are here to help.”
