Westside Terrace Healthcare Celebrates 16th Annual Cornucopia of Care Food Drive for Seniors

As Thanksgiving approaches, Westside Terrace Healthcare is once again inviting the Dothan community to share in the true spirit of the season: compassion, generosity, and care for our neighbors in need. The Cornucopia of Care Food Drive—now in its remarkable 16th year—is underway, continuing a deeply rooted Westside tradition of giving back to local seniors who face food insecurity during the holiday season.

A Season of Giving that Has Become a Tradition

What began sixteen years ago as a small project among staff has grown into one of the area’s most enduring community outreach efforts. Each year, Westside Terrace residents, employees, family members, and friends join forces to collect non-perishable food and household items for distribution to seniors throughout the Wiregrass region.

“This drive is one of the most meaningful things we do each year,” said Kristie Hughes, Administrator at Westside Terrace Healthcare. “It brings our entire campus together—residents, team members, families, and the broader Dothan community—to make sure that no senior is forgotten during the holidays. Every can, every box, and every note of encouragement adds up to something truly special.”

Over the years, the Cornucopia of Care initiative has provided thousands of pounds of food to older adults. The program’s impact reaches far beyond physical nourishment—it reminds those receiving the boxes that their community still cares deeply about them.

2025 Cornucopia of Care Drive Details

This year’s Cornucopia of Care Food Drive runs from October 6 through November 20. Donations can be dropped off daily at the front entrance of Westside Terrace Healthcare, 501 North Woodburn Drive, Dothan, between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

The team is collecting a variety of shelf-stable foods and household staples, including:

  • Canned meats, soups, fruits and vegetables, and gravy
  • Pasta, rice, and beans
  • Cereal, oatmeal, and shelf-stable milk
  • Packaged dessert mixes
  • Holiday treats such as cocoa, coffee, and cookies
Meeting a Growing Need

The mission behind Cornucopia of Care has only become more important over time. According to Feeding America, more than one in ten Alabama seniors struggles with consistent access to nutritious food—a challenge often worsened by limited mobility, rising grocery costs, and the isolation that can accompany aging.

“For some older adults, the holidays can be lonely or stressful,” Hughes explained. “A simple box of food and a personal visit can make a huge difference. It’s about letting them know they’re valued and remembered.”

The Joy of Delivery

During the week before Thanksgiving, Westside Terrace employees and volunteers will pack and deliver the food boxes to local senior households and community centers. Each package contains not only pantry staples but also small comforts and personal touches—handwritten cards, holiday napkins, or a few extra treats that bring a smile.

“The deliveries are the best part,” Hughes shared. “When we knock on that door and see someone’s face light up, it reminds us why we do this every year. It’s emotional, uplifting, and humbling all at once.”

How to Get Involved

Community members and local businesses are invited to join the effort. There are several ways to contribute:

  • Drop off donations at Westside Terrace Healthcare between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., October 6 – November 20.
  • Host a collection site at your business, church, or civic club — call Westside for pickup support.

Those interested in hosting a collection site can contact Westside Terrace Healthcare at (334) 792-0921 for details.

Sixteen Years of Gratitude

As the Cornucopia of Care marks its 16th year, the staff at Westside Terrace Healthcare remains humbled by the continued support of the Dothan community. What started as a small act of kindness has grown into a legacy of compassion that brings people together year after year.

“Sixteen years later, the heart of this project is still the same,” said Hughes. “We simply want to make sure the seniors in our community feel cared for—because they are the ones who built the community we all enjoy today. Their wellbeing matters to us.”
